Samsung made a historic agreement: Going for 6G and big changes on the horizon
There was a time when brands were able to equip themselves with SoC chips from many manufacturers: Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, or even Nvidia all offered their own. Gradually, Qualcomm has become dominant in the market, although the competition from MediaTek remains.
Manufacturers have always had the opportunity to develop their own chips at home. Apple is known for doing this, as are Samsung and Exynos. This division took a hit with the signing of a landmark agreement between Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics.

The agreement is very clear: Samsung agrees to expand its collaboration with Snapdragon platforms to include future high-end Samsung Galaxy products. That includes smartphones, and we're obviously thinking about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23, as well as PCs, tablets, and extended-to-the-future reality headsets. The release leaves the door open for additional product categories, such as smartwatches.
In April, we learned that Samsung was considering sourcing from MediaTek for the Galaxy S22 FE and Galaxy S23. This may be an argument for the brand in its negotiations with Qualcomm. With this agreement, that appears to be no longer on the agenda.
However, it remains unclear whether Samsung will continue to offer the future Galaxy S ranges in two variants, one with a Snapdragon chip in the US, and one with an Exynos chip in Europe and Asia. It is assumed that all future high-end models are now moving to the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, although this has not been confirmed by either group. Samsung still wants to reassure the future of the Exynos with an explanation of its strategy.
Target patents on 6G
This deal isn't just for future Samsung Galaxy products and Snapdragon platforms. Qualcomm and Samsung agreed to exchange licenses on their patents on 3G, 4G and 5G.
The press release goes so far as to mention the future of 6G with an exchange until 2030.
