Euro 2022: England beat Spain 2-1 thanks to Georgia Stanway's stunning goal
Host nation England are through to the semi-finals of Euro 2022 after beating Spain 2-1 at Brighton’s Amex Stadium.
Sarina Wiegman’s side cruised through the group stage of the tournament, winning all three of their games and not conceding a single goal. But in Spain, they faced a much tougher task.
England dug deep, though, and managed to record a hugely impressive comeback victory thanks to Ella Toone’s late equaliser and an absolute stunner from Georgia Stanway in the first half of extra-time.
After a fairly even first half between the two teams, Real Madrid‘s Esther Gonzalez fired Spain into the lead on 54 minutes, the talented forward finishing calmly from inside the box after some rather slack defending from England.
Shortly after they fell behind, England thought they were going to be awarded a penalty for a foul on Lauren Hemp, but the referee gave a free-kick in Spain’s favour instead.

Yeah, England were mighty unlucky but that was all forgotten when they eventually drew level in the 84th minute through second half substitute Toone.
She was found in the box by Manchester United teammate Alessia Russo and calmly finished off the chance to send the home fans inside the sold out stadium wild.
The noise really was deafening.
And the decibel levels went up tenfold at the start of extra-time when Stanway let rip from all of 20 yards out.
The Bayern Munich star’s rocket of a shot flew into the back of Spain’s net and perhaps the only thing that was better than the goal itself was the iconic commentary on BBC’s broadcast.
What an incredible moment on the south coast! One that England fans and players – Stanway in particular – will never, ever forget.
FotMob statistics
Understandably, Stanway’s wonder strike was enough to see her register the highest FotMob rating of any England player with an 8.09.
It was the midfielder’s 11th goal for England but by far her most important and one that will no doubt live long in the memory.
While Stanway was the hero, there were plenty of impressive performances from the rest of Sarina Wiegman’s side. Captain Leah Williamson led from the front as ever, completing more passes than any other England player with 65 and achieving a FotMob rating of 7.90.
The rest of England’s defence also deserve praise, especially for the way they dealt with a barrage of Spanish pressure throughout the game.
Millie Bright and Rachel Daly both scored FotMob ratings above seven, as did Lucy Bronze, who produced two successful tackles and dazzled with some impressive footwork in the first half.
Substitute Ella Toone was another to make a decisive impact on the night – scoring the Lionesses’ all-important equaliser in the 84th minute.
According to FotMob, the Man United forward had two shots on the night and created a chance for her teammates. Spain stuck to their game plan valiantly and had 57 percent possession on the night but in the end it was not to be.
Mariona Caldentey had the team’s highest FotMob rating with a 7.38, while defender Ona Battle registered five tackles in total.
