Airbnb suspends operations in Russia and Belarus. The company's decision was announced by CEO Brian Chesky in a tweet.
"Airbnb is suspending all operations in Russia and Belarus," Chesky wrote on his Twitter account @bchesky.
According to a Reuters report, as quoted by Engadget, Friday (4/3/2022), Airbnb's temporarily suspended operations include around 90,000 active short-term rentals on various platforms in Russia and more than 1,800 in Belarus.
Regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Chesky on Monday this week offered free housing to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees who fled to European countries including Poland, Germany, Hungary and Romania.
Some Airbnb users have also taken a stand on their own, with some people buying Airbnb rentals in Ukraine to help raise money for residents facing economic hardship.
"My wife and I just booked your apartment for a week but of course we won't be visiting. This is just so you can receive some money," one user wrote to an Airbnb tenant in Ukraine.
Airbnb has also agreed to waive guest and host fees for all bookings in Ukraine.
Until this news rises, Chesky has not revealed when the company will reopen its services in Russia and Belarus.
Airbnb Considers Crypto Payments
Previously, Chesky asked users for advice via his personal Twitter account on what Airbnb will launch in 2022.
Reporting from Bitcoin.com, Friday (7/1/2022), Chesky revealed he received 4,000 suggestions, noting the most popular was for his company to accept payments using crypto assets.
Other top suggestions are for a clear price display, guest loyalty program, updated cleaning fees, longer stays and discounts, better customer service, and commercial space.
To date, the payment options Airbnb offers in most countries are Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, and Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Paypal.
