The Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday (1/2) local time said it would not accept the presence of an official Russian government delegation for the 75th edition of the event in May as an effort to express solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
"Unless the war can end on conditions that will satisfy the Ukrainian people, it has been decided that we will not welcome an official Russian delegation or accept the presence of anyone associated with the Russian government," organizers were quoted as saying by Variety on Wednesday.
Organizers said the festival's events were against the war situation and criticized the attitude of Russia and its leaders. On the other hand
It also commends the courage of all those in Russia who took risks to protest the aggression and invasion of Ukraine.
While delegates from the Russian government were barred from attending, the Cannes Festival statement implied that individual filmmakers were still welcome at the festival.
However, it remains unclear whether their film will be selected for entry into the competition or entered elsewhere in the festival.
In recent years, French festivals have highlighted a new generation of Russian filmmakers such as Kirill Serebrennikov. Serebrennikov's last two films, "Petrov's Flu" and "Leto", have competed at the festival.
Serebrennikov is expected to return to the Cannes competition this year with the film "Tchaikovsky's Wife". The film was produced by Hype Film, a Moscow-based company, with international partners including Charades Productions, Logical Pictures, and Bord Cadre Films.
But meanwhile, Serebrennikov is still banned from traveling outside Russia for three years and accused of embezzlement by the Russian government.
On Tuesday (1/2), the European Film Academy (EFA) also took a stand on Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The EFA decided to exclude Russian films from the European Film Awards.
