James Blunt has threatened to ‘release new music’ if Spotify doesn't remove Joe Rogan from its platform.

The singer, who is known for being pretty bloody funny on Twitter, joined in the ongoing feud between musician Neil Young and the music streaming service over the controversial podcaster.

Last week, Young publicly announced he wanted his music removed from Spotify if they continued to host Rogan’s show, which he said spread misinformation during the coronavirus pandemic.

Spotify have decided to stick with Rogan and have begun the process of moving Young’s records.

Then in a seeming act of solidarity fellow musician Joni Mitchell also removed her music from Spotify.

Now, Blunt has joined in - in his usual tongue-in-cheek style - by saying: “If @spotify doesn’t immediately remove @joerogan, I will release new music onto the platform.”

The post has since gone viral with more than 80,000 likes and ‘James Blunt’ trending.

Fans of Blunt were clearly impressed with his latest post - one person commented: "James Blunt... the best banter in the music industry. And can write a decent tune too."

Another said: "This is a very plausible contender for the best tweet ever."

While a third wrote: "Oh what a piece of comedy gold this tweet from James Blunt is!!! That’s the heartiest out-loud laugh I’ve had this week."

But not everyone got the joke, with one Twitter user replying: "It’s a free world JB. While we love your work; we would ask kindly that you stick to just that."

Another person who saw the joke sail right over their head, commented: "So....if this is so important to you, why don't you remove your music first, and then tweet about why you removed it? You know, act, instead of clout chasing or doing publicity stunts…"

Young shared an open letter to his music label and management, in which he wrote: "I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines - potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them.

"Please act on this immediately today and keep me informed of the time schedule.

"I want you to let Spotify know immediately TODAY that I want all my music off their platform. They can have Rogan or Young. Not both."

After Young’s music was removed, he wrote a post on his website in which he claimed he ‘felt better’.

He wrote: “Private companies have the right to choose what they profit from, just as I can choose not to have my music support a platform that disseminates harmful information.

"I am happy and proud to stand in solidarity with the front line health care workers who risk their lives every day to help others."
