Australian Open 2023 results: Emma Raducanu loses to Coco Gauff in Melbourne British number one Emma Raducanu is out of the Australian Open after losing in straight sets to Coco Gauff in a gripping second-round match.
Raducanu, ranked 77th in the world, acquitted herself very well against the American seventh seed but a lack of matches told in a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) defeat.
The 20-year-old had battled an ankle injury before the Melbourne major.
Defeat means Raducanu has not reached the third round of a Grand Slam since her stunning 2021 US Open win.
Had she been able to take one of two set points at 5-4 in the second - which would have forced a deciding set - it might have led to a different outcome.
Teenager Gauff, who famously reached the Wimbledon last 16 as a 15-year-old in 2019, is among the favourites to win the title at Melbourne Park.
"I told myself to hang in there, Emma played really good tennis towards the end of the match," said 18-year-old Gauff.
"It was a good quality match for the most part. This was a long anticipated match-up so I'm glad it was a good match for the crowd."
Aiming for her first Grand Slam triumph, Gauff will face Chinese 29th seed Qinwen Zheng or fellow American Bernarda Pera in the third round on Friday.
Raducanu's exit means there is no British interest left in the women's singles, while Cameron Norrie, Andy Murray and Dan Evans are still to play their second-round matches in the men's draw.
Norrie, seeded 11th, is scheduled to play in Wednesday's final match on Kia Arena, but it remains to be seen if he will get chance to take to the court against French world number 65 Constant Lestienne.
A backlog of matches still to be played remains after long rain delays in Melbourne meant play on the outside courts did not start until 5pm local time (06:00 GMT).
Raducanu can take pride and positivity from performance Raducanu conceded it has been a "great achievement" even getting on to court at Melbourne Park this week following the ankle injury she sustained in Auckland 13 days ago.
Rolling the left ankle meant she had to retire from the match against Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova, leaving Raducanu in tears when she left the court.
Before her opening match against Germany's Tamara Korpatsch, she said she "fully trusted" the ankle but her movement was always going to be tested more against Gauff.
The issue did not appear to be factor as Raducanu went toe-to-toe with the French Open finalist in a match packed with intense baseline rallies.
Raducanu grew in confidence as the match went on, playing on the front foot and pinning Gauff back with her aggressive and accurate groundstrokes.
However, her lack of court time also told with some loose shots letting Gauff off the hook at pivotal moments, including when the Briton missed those two set points by hitting a slightly-impatient backhand long and then a drop-shot into the net.
While any defeat hurts, Raducanu will undoubtedly look back on this performance with plenty of pride and positivity for the future.
The start of a long rivalry? Eyes were instantly drawn to this potential match-up when the draw for the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2023 season was made last week - and the contest between two of the sport's most exciting prospect did not disappoint.
True, lots of errors flowed from both racquets. But there was plenty of quality in an entertaining match which will have left many keen to see this develop into a long and enduring rivalry.
Gauff is the younger player with the greater experience, but Raducanu is the one who is already a major champion - a tag which Gauff is keen to add to her resume this season.
That is what made this match such an intriguing prospect.
Gauff warmed up for the Australian Open by winning a WTA event in Auckland and looked to be cruising towards victory when she was a set and a break up.
But doubts begin to creep into her game - particularly on her forehand side - as Raducanu rallied in the second set.
An old failing returned when a double fault provided three break chances for Raducanu at 4-3 and the American handed over the first one with an unconvincing forehand into the net.
However, Gauff showed her greater experience to regroup mentally and come through the tie-break.
Australian Open 2023: Injured Rafael Nadal loses to Mackenzie McDonald Rafael Nadal's Australian Open title defence is over after a second-round defeat by American Mackenzie McDonald in which he struggled with an injury.
The Spaniard, 36, was trailing by a set and a break when he pulled up with what appeared to be a hip problem.
He took a medical timeout towards the end of the second set and continued with the match, but ultimately slipped to a 6-4 6-3 7-5 defeat.
It is Nadal's earliest exit at the Australian Open since 2016.
It was a cruel end for Nadal after his stunning 2022, where he came back from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev in last year's final in Melbourne and won a record-extending 14th French Open crown in June.
However, a typically battling display in the Wimbledon quarter-finals led to him picking up an abdominal injury that hampered him for the rest of the season.
He arrived in Melbourne having lost his only two singles matches of the season and never looked fully comfortable before he seemed to jar his hip against McDonald.
Nadal's wife was left in tears and his support team also looked emotional in the player box as the two-time champion struggled to move on Rod Laver Arena.
After seeing the match through to the end he left to a standing ovation from the crowd, with top seed Nadal turning to wave to each corner before exiting the stadium.
Questions remain over Nadal's future after exit Nadal, bidding for a men's record-extending 23rd Grand Slam singles title, arrived at the first major of the year having lost six of his past seven matches and with further questions about his future.
It is the latest in a long series of physical problems for Nadal, who admitted he had no feeling in his left foot during his victory at Roland Garros last year because of painkilling injections for the chronic injury.
He ignored his support box's pleas for him to retire from his Wimbledon quarter-final against Taylor Fritz, where he somehow managed to win despite being unable to serve or move properly. He subsequently withdrew from the tournament before his semi-final against Nick Kyrgios.

The abdominal injury he picked up at SW19 then hampered him at the US Open, where he suffered a fourth-round exit against Frances Tiafoe and appeared to injure his rib.
He came through a tough first-round test in Melbourne against Britain's Jack Draper but against 65th-ranked McDonald his movement and speed appeared off.
Nadal was running out wide to pick up a forehand when he appeared to jar his left hip, immediately touching the area and dropping to his haunches.
He limped through the rest of the game and then left court for a medical timeout, returning to see out the second set.
Despite being unable to chase down any deep shots, Nadal somehow managed to hold serve until 5-5 in the third set before McDonald secured the inevitable break.
'Nadal was clinging on' - analysis BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller in Melbourne
There have been times when Nadal has pulled out of Grand Slam matches, but today he felt he could continue with no further problems.
He was barely moving, but serving quite nicely, but once he was broken it was all over.
We have to say how well McDonald played. He absolutely made all the running in the early stages. Nadal was clinging on.
I don't know if that was a pre-existing condition - we'll find out more when he gives his press conference.
Auger-Aliassime fights back to reach third round Elsewhere on day three, Canada's sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime battled back from two sets down to secure a 3-6 3-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 win over Alex Molcan.
The 22-year-old looked set for an early exit in Melbourne as his error-strewn play - featuring 25 unforced errors - enabled his Slovakian opponent to take the upper hand.
But after irately complaining to the umpire about the state of the balls at the start of the third set, the world number seven was able to turn his fortunes around, wrapping up the match in just over three hours.
"It's quite simple, you have to put the ball in the court without missing," said Auger-Aliassime, who came from behind to win a five-setter for the fifth time in his career.
"At the end of the day, it's not rocket science. So I was just trying to put one more ball in the court and make it simple, make it work."
The second round proved a much easier affair for Italy's 15th seed Jannik Sinner as he defeated Tomas Etcheverry 6-3 6-2 6-2, while American 16th seed Frances Tiafoe also won in straight sets, easing to a 6-4 6-4 6-1 win over Shang Juncheng of China.
Tiafoe will play 18th seed Karen Khachanov next after the Russian defeated Australian Jason Kubler 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-2.
Australian Open 2023: Rafael Nadal 'mentally destroyed' after second-round exit Injured Rafael Nadal says he is "mentally destroyed" after his Australian Open title defence came to an end in the second round.
Spaniard Nadal struggled with a left hip problem as he fell to a 6-4 6-3 7-5 defeat by American Mackenzie McDonald.
The 36-year-old said he was carrying the injury before the match but the pain had been "nothing like today".
"I really hope that it doesn't put me out of the court for a long time," Nadal said.
"It's not only the recovery. It's all the amount of work that you need to put together to come back at a decent level.
"I went through this process too many times in my career, and I am ready to keep doing it. I think, but that's not easy."
Speaking at his post-match news conference, 22-time Grand Slam champion Nadal said he felt he "cannot move" after his earliest exit at a Grand Slam since the 2016 Australian Open, when he was eliminated in the first round.
"[I] just can't say that I am not destroyed mentally at this time, because I will be lying," he said.
"Hopefully, it is nothing too bad. In the end [there] have been three positive weeks in terms of practice."
Nadal was trailing by a set and a break when he pulled up with the injury, taking a medical timeout towards the end of the second set before continuing.
He said he had considered stopping "all the time" but "didn't want to leave the court with a retirement".
"Just try your best until the end," added Nadal, who won his second Melbourne title 12 months ago. "It doesn't matter the chances that you have. That's the philosophy of the sport.
"That's the essence of the sport by itself. I tried to follow that during all my tennis career, and I tried of course to not increase the damage, because I didn't know what's going on."
This is the latest in a series of physical problems for Nadal, who admitted he had no feeling in his left foot during his victory at the French Open last year because of painkilling injections for the chronic injury.
He also withdrew from his Wimbledon semi-final last year with an abdominal injury he picked up in the previous match, and the same injury then hampered him at the US Open, where he suffered a fourth-round exit against Frances Tiafoe and appeared to injure his rib.
He said it was his love of the sport that keeps him going amid the injury setbacks.
"It's a very simple thing: I like what I do," he said. "I like playing tennis. I know it's not forever. I like to feel myself competitive. I like to fight for the things that I have been fighting for almost half of my life or even more.
"When you do things that you like to do, at the end of the day, it's not a sacrifice.
"Sacrifice is when you are doing things that you don't want to do. And that was not my case. But of course it's tiring and frustrating to [spend] a lot of my tennis career on recovering process and trying to fight against all this stuff all the time.
"But I accept it quite well during all my tennis career, and I was able to manage it well. But of course [the] last seven months have been, again, another tough period of time. I don't know what can happen in the future."

Xavi claimed his first trophy as Barcelona manager after a comfortable victory over rivals Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.
The La Liga leaders dominated the match in Saudi Arabia and took the lead when 18-year-old Gavi fired in from Robert Lewandowski's pass.
Lewandowski struck just before half time when he finished from Gavi's pass.
Gavi got another assist in the second half as he set up Pedri, before Karim Benzema struck a late consolation.
The Frenchman's late goal was scant consolation for Real Madrid, who were a distant second best throughout.
Indeed, Thibaut Courtois prevented Barcelona from winning by an even bigger margin with a couple of smart saves.
The former Chelsea goalkeeper was tested early when he turned Lewandowski's sweeping effort onto the post and he also kept out Ousmane Dembele's powerful strike.
But after Pedri got his side's third midway through the second half with a tap-in there was never any doubt about the result as Barcelona won the Super Cup for the first time since 2018.
Real Madrid were just unable to handle the brilliance of Gavi who, alongside his two assists, became the youngest scorer in a Spanish Super Cup, with his goal surpassing the record of his current manager Xavi.
Back in October these two sides faced each other in the first El Clasico meeting of the season, with Real Madrid easing to a 3-1 win.
But Barcelona have since only gone from strength-to-strength and are currently top of La Liga, three points clear of Real, with this victory extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine games.
Mykhailo Mudryk: Who is Chelsea's new big-money signing from Shakhtar Donetsk? Chelsea have spent an initial £62m on a player with 12 career goals who has never played outside Ukraine, so who is Mykhailo Mudryk and why has he caught the eye?
The 22-year-old Shakhtar Donetsk left winger, who has played eight times for Ukraine, increased his stature in this season's Champions League.
Until this season he had only scored two goals in 47 appearances for three different clubs in his homeland.
But this season his form and profile have soared to greater heights.
Mudryk netted three times in the Champions League group stage for Shakhtar - at Leipzig and then two against Celtic - despite their elimination. That is more than any Chelsea player managed.
He also made two assists, as many as any of his soon-to-be Blues team-mates.

Mudryk, who has signed a contract until 2031 and could cost Chelsea a further £27m in bonuses, has netted seven goals in his last eight Ukrainian Premier League matches, with six assists in 12 matches.
In fact he has averaged a goal or assist every 65 minutes in the Ukrainian league this season, and every 79 minutes last season.
All this amid the uncertainty in his homeland with the continuing invasion by Russia. This season, Shakhtar have played home games in Kyiv, Lviv and Polish capital Warsaw.
Mudryk does not lack ambition and spoke of his desire to win the Ballon d'Or this weekend.
On being awarded the trophy for Shakhtar's player of the year for the second time in a row, he told their club website: "No-one expected me to win the Shakhtar player of the year award in 2021 and no-one expects me to get the Golden Ball as well, but it might happen one day. This is one of my personal goals."
Mudryk has played more games for Roberto de Zerbi, who was Shakhtar boss in 2021-22, than any other manager.
The Italian, now in charge of Brighton, recently said: "I think Mudryk can win the Ballon d'Or in the future."
Mudryk stepped up to the plate after most of Shakhtar's foreign players left for free following a Fifa ruling last year that non-Ukrainians could suspend their contracts following the Russian invasion.
Shakhtar demanded £43m in damages from Fifa over lost transfer fees - and probably caused the club to demand such a high fee for one of their few saleable assets.
Until this season Mudryk would not have been hugely known outside of his homeland.
He had goalless loan spells with Arsenal Kyiv in 2018-19 and Desna Chernihiv in 2020-21, as well as a smattering of appearances for his parent club without finding the net.
He made his Champions League debut last season and netted two goals in the Ukrainian Premier League which was never finished because of the war.
But it has been his displays in this campaign where Mudryk made himself a target for several of Europe's top teams.
Shakhtar president Rinat Akhmetov said: "I am sure that Mykhailo will win respect, sympathy and love of all connoisseurs of world football with his speed, his technique, his impressive and beautiful play."
Mudryk has also made himself a regular in the Ukraine team since his debut in June 2022, with six of his eight caps coming against Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
Chelsea called Mudryk "a skilful player with plenty of pace" and "one of the most dangerous attacking players in Europe in one-v-one situations".
Blues chairman Todd Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali added in a statement: 'He's a hugely exciting talent who we believe will be a terrific addition to our squad both now and in the years to come."

Marcus Rashford is fit, firing and having fun. Yet his impressive recent form also shows why he is not the answer to Manchester United's need for a new striker, according to two former England forwards.
Rashford led United to a dominant 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, but Alan Shearer and Michael Owen say they must buy a 'number nine' to complement the 25-year-old's quality.
Against Forest, Rashford scored United's first goal after sweeping in a well-worked corner routine initiated by Christian Eriksen and then teed up Anthony Martial to fire in the second midway through the first half.
With Martial operating as the main striker, the England international played a little deeper on the left, which enabled him to cause problems for the Forest defence with his movement.
"I think Marcus enjoys it more, he looks better certainly, in the position we saw tonight," Shearer said on Amazon Prime.
"He's been given a little bit of freedom - if he wants to go down the middle at times, he can.
"But when he's got all that space to run into from out wide, he's a better player in doing that and he's very, very good at doing that.

"In terms of him being a centre-forward, he lacks that killer instinct, that natural ability to think 'yeah, I'm going to get in there, I'm going to get the two or three yarders'.
"But there's no doubting his ability, he's a fantastic player."
Owen, also working at Old Trafford as a television pundit, agreed with his former England strike partner.
"I do feel that Rashford is better on the left, he will contribute a decent number of goals each year," said the former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward.
"But he's not going to be the Ruud van Nistelrooy, the Robin van Persie, the Wayne Rooney who scores 30-plus goals a season.
"Obviously he is a huge asset to this football club, gives them something different, gives them pace, gives them directness."
United's need for a new 'out and out' striker has long been apparent and the search has been accelerated by Cristiano Ronaldo's departure by mutual consent before the World Cup.
Frenchman Martial, 27, staked his claim to be manager Erik ten Hag's regular striker with a decent showing against Forest, but there remains the feeling he has already had enough chances to prove his worth to United over eight seasons without ever being fully convincing.
PSV Eindhoven's Cody Gakpo was a long-time attacking target - even though the Dutchman, like Rashford, is seen as being more productive behind a frontman - but United appear to have been beaten to his signing by Liverpool.
After beating Forest, Ten Hag admitted it would be "good" to get another forward but only if United's "sporting and financial criteria" were met.
"I'd certainly look to go into the market to see if they could find a centre-forward," added Shearer.

"But that's easier said than done as that many clubs are looking for that guy that can go out and get you 25 goals a season."
Owen, who also had a spell at Old Trafford, added: "Rashford should be getting 20 a season if you include all the cups. In terms of the league, if he gets 15 that would be a very good return.
"But I think Manchester United need that number nine - whether it's Martial or another player."
Rashford suffered a dip in form under United interim boss Ralf Rangnick last season, scoring just twice in 23 appearances and rarely playing a full 90 minutes.
This season, looking reinvigorated under Ten Hag and playing with a smile again, he has netted 10 times in 21 games for his club.
"I don't know if it is as good as I've ever been playing but I'm definitely enjoying it," Rashford told Amazon Prime.
"We're winning a lot more football games and our level has been a lot higher. I'm happy with how were developing and hope we can keep kicking on.
"It's a completely different mindset to last season, a different team playing different football.
"For me, when you're not in the team and coming on, there is a different mindset and you have to think about making an impact and you're not sure when you get another chance or another goal.
"But I'm enjoying what I'm doing at the minute."

An athlete, former jockey AP McCoy said earlier this year, is the only person who dies twice, such is the pain of walking away from the intoxicating, all-consuming nature of professional sport.
McCoy retired from his long, decorated racing career in 2015, and since then has had to learn, in his own words, how to “start again and have another life.”
Based on the past 12 months, there are some notable sports stars who might have been listening extra closely to McCoy’s experience of retirement – or indeed to anyone else who has spoken candidly about the difficulty of ending a successful sporting career.
Among them is Roger Federer, who called time on his trophy-laden tennis career at the Laver Cup in September after years spent trying to recover from two knee surgeries.
In the letter announcing his retirement, Federer, like McCoy, alluded to the heightened emotions of being a professional athlete and how they make saying goodbye so hard.
“I have laughed and cried, felt joy and pain, and most of all I have felt incredibly alive,” Federer wrote. “To the game of tennis,” he signed off the letter, “I love you and will never leave you.”
Those final words were reassuring for fans who have admired Federer’s career for so many years, but also spoke to another issue: namely, of how hard it can be to walk away entirely from professional sport after retirement.
It remains to be seen exactly how Federer will remain involved in tennis moving forward, and the same can be said of Serena Williams, who announced she would “evolve away from tennis” ahead of this year’s US Open – but refused to say she was retiring.

On several occasions over the past three months, the 23-time grand slam champion has even teased fans about a potential return to tennis.
Lengthening careers While Federer and Williams have stepped away from their careers as two of the greatest athletes of all time, other sports stars can’t seem to decide when, or how, to walk away.
Heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury has yo-yoed in and out of retirement this year, saying in October that he’s finding it “really hard to let this thing go.”
And earlier this year, Tom Brady announced he would be retiring from the NFL, leaving the sport as a seven-time Super Bowl champion and arguably the greatest quarterback of all time. the 45-year-old then reversed that decision and is still breaking records with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his 23rd season in the NFL.
However in September, Brady and Gisele Bündchen announced they were to divorce after 13 years of marriage.
“I think there is a lot of professionals in life that go through things that they deal with at work and they deal with at home,” the Bucs quarterback said on his weekly podcast a few days the couple’s divorce announcement.
“Obviously, the good news is it’s a very amicable situation, and I’m really focused on two things: taking care of my family, and certainly my children, and secondly doing the best job I can to win football games. That’s what professionals do.”
Brady has redefined what most believed to be the average shelf-life of an athlete, and he’s not the only person refusing to let the light dim on his career.
LeBron James is about to turn 38 but is still setting records in the NBA – in February passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most combined regular season and postseason points in NBA history.

Federer’s rivals Rafael Nadal, 36, and Novak Djokovic, 35, meanwhile, have added to their grand slam tallies this year – the Mallorcan at the Australian Open and French Open, where he became the oldest men’s singles champion, and the Serbian at Wimbledon. Djokovic’s Wimbledon triumph moved him to within one grand slam title of Nadal’s men’s record of 22.
Having been deported from Australia over his vaccination status at the start of the year, Djokovic is set to compete at the Australian Open at the start of 2023 – a tournament he has won on nine previous occasions and is favorite to win again next year off the back of his recent ATP Finals victory.
For Nadal, his future in the sport rests on the amount of strain his injury-ravaged body can continue to withstand.

We associate the week of Christmas with gift giving and receiving. For college football coaches, they receive their biggest presents of the season just a few days before the holiday when the early signing period begins.
Most of the elite recruits confirmed their choices by putting pen to paper Wednesday, while others made late announcements or surprising flips to new school. The ramification of these decisions will be felt for the next three to four years as those that have evaluated correctly and successfully pursued their right targets are in position to benefit when those players hit the field.
While recruiting is always going to be an inexact science, there is inarguably a higher correlation of success for those rated at the top of the charts. With that in mind, we break down the winners and losers of the 2023 class.
Winners
Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State
Yes, it's a big shocker this trio again leads the way with three of the best classes. The Crimson Tide are the consensus No. 1 finishers helped by some late additions. Defensive lineman Keon Keeley - a former Notre Dame commit - came aboard last week and Kadyn Proctor, a longtime offensive lineman pledged to Iowa, flipped this week. Samuel M'Pemba could be the next defensive line standout for the Bulldogs, who have a class that is unusually short on the very top talents but has impressive depth throughout. The Buckeyes, unsurprisingly, landed two of the best wide receiver signees - Brandon Inniss and Carnell Tate - both from Florida.
Texas The Longhorns were the surprise winners of the long and highly publicized chase for Arch Manning's signature and his commitment powered an impressive group of newcomers to Austin. Also jumping on board later in the process were two in-state defenders - linebacker Anthony Hill and defensive lineman Colton Vasek, who decommitted from Texas A&M and Oklahoma, respectively. The offensive side of the ball gets a boost from wide receiver Johntay Cook and running back Cedric Baxter. Both could see immediate playing time next fall.
Oregon No program experienced the highs and lows of the recruiting season in the final week more than the Ducks. They appeared to have their quarterback of the future resolved when five-star Dante Moore committed this summer. The departure of offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham for the Arizona State job helped persuade Moore to join Pac-12 rival UCLA. Oregon moved quickly to add longtime Baylor quarterback commitment Austin Novosad from Texas on signing day. The Ducks then sprung two five-star surprises in a matter of minutes Wednesday by getting Notre Dame defensive back commitment Peyton Bowen to flip and successfully pulling defensive lineman Matayo Uiagalelei from finalists Ohio State and Southern California. There is some drama surrounding Bowen, who had yet to sign as of Wednesday evening.

Miami The Hurricanes stumbled to a disappointing campaign under first-year coach Mario Cristobal, but still were able to pull together what appears to be a class that will finish in the top five. Cristobal's background as an offensive line coach also came in handy with the signings of Samson Okunlola and Francis Mauigoa, two five-star prospects who could provide immediate help up front next fall. The lone question is the status of five-star defensive back Cormani McClain, the jewel of the incoming group that pushed off signing Wednesday.
Losers
Michigan Two consecutive College Football Playoff appearances should have the Wolverines in the mix with other elite programs. But they finished with a class barely inside the top 20, lacking the strength in the trenches that has driven the team's recent success and also doesn't include a quarterback that could be groomed next season with J.J. McCarthy possibly entering the 2024 NFL draft. On the positive side, the late additions of wide receivers Karmello English and Semaj Morgan bolster that position.
Notre Dame It wasn't that the Fighting Irish didn't do well in Marcus Freeman's first full class. They finished comfortably in the top 10 with running back Jeremiyah Love and defensive back Christian Gray signing from St. Louis high schools and in-state linebacker Drayk Bowen coming aboard. However, this had the potential to be one of their best classes in decades before defection of Keeley and expected loss of Bowen, two players that are the profile the program needs to win in the playoff.
Texas A&M It was always going to be hard for the Aggies to replicate last year's phenomenal class that earned praise as one of the best in the modern history of recruiting. However, the Aggies have already lost significant pieces from that group to the portal and struggled to gain the same traction with some of the biggest recruits this cycle. The disappointing play of Jimbo Fisher's offense and a 5-7 finish certainly had an impact, but finishing well outside the top 10 - even with a smaller class than others - is a disappointment for a program that needed to keep building on the impressive 2022 haul to get where it wants to go.
New coaches The early signing day forces new hires from outside the current program to assemble classes in a matter of days, and not months, during a period of time where instability and recent results leave little foundation for this recruiting cycle. Hugh Freeze of Auburn was only coach in this situation to have a top 25 class. Among those that need to take advantage of the late signing period and start building for 2024 are Ryan Walters of Purdue, Scott Satterfield of Cincinnati, Kenny Dillingham of Arizona State and Deion Sanders of Colorado.
Franco Harris' historic play not only thing that was immaculate; his career was, too | Opinion
Whenever I spoke to Franco Harris, usually just chatting at various media events, he was always friendly, charming and blunt. He'd talk about anything and was usually fairly chill unless one topic came up: the Immaculate Reception.
Harris was a fierce defender of the most stunning, wonderful and controversial play in the history of the NFL and maybe in the history of American sports. Harris was keenly aware there was doubt about the legitimacy of the play – particularly from the then Oakland Raiders, the victims of that dramatic turn of events – and he defended that moment, that incredible moment that would later launch a dynasty, like a bouncer at the front door of a club.
The Raiders always say that play was illegal, I once told Harris.
"The Raiders are full of it," Harris said back.
"No way that play should have counted," Raiders linebacker Phil Villapiano, who played in that game, once told me. Then again, Villapiano has said that to many people. To the Raiders, that play wasn't immaculate, it was illegitimate. The only thing that was received was home cooking from the game officials, they say.
The Raiders hated the outcome but that didn't stop it from counting, or stop Harris from evolving into instant, living history. The Steelers would lose the following week in the AFC title game to the undefeated Dolphins – who created a history of their own going 17-0 – but the play, either from heaven or hell, depending on your geolocation, started the Steelers' dynasty. The franchise would go on to win four Super Bowls in six seasons and was the team of the decade in the 1970s.
Harris died overnight at the age of 72. His death comes just days before the team was going to retire his No. 32 jersey and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception.
As long as there's an NFL, that play will be remembered. Hell, as long as there's a Pittsburgh International Airport that play will be remembered since Harris' moment is captured in a statue there right next to a picture of George Washington. Washington only crossed the Delaware; Harris helped the Steelers become a dynasty.

"I was in Section 135 that day. I was eight months old. I think it's funny. Surprisingly, I’ve probably met 75,000 people that were there that day," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told the media on Tuesday. "It's just one of those beautiful things in the history of our game. It’s humbling to be in close proximity to it, to work for this organization, to understand its impact on this organization, the career it spawned in Franco [Harris], a gold-jacket career, what it did for them that season in terms of changing the trajectory of that season, what it’s done for this franchise …"
That play defined Harris' career and, in some ways, overshadowed just how remarkable a talent he was. Harris made nine Pro Bowls, was the MVP of Super Bowl IX, and is part of the 1970s All-Decade team.
Harris was 230 pounds but could be quick and darting. His game would translate well into today's sport.
If you're one of the six NFL fans who have never seen the Immaculate Reception, it's worth taking a break from whatever you're doing to watch it. Harris' historic moment happened in that 1972 playoff game as the Raiders were winning, 7-6, with 22 seconds remaining. Quarterback Terry Bradshaw's pass to receiver John Fuqua was deflected as he was being hit. Harris scooped up the pass and scored.
The Raiders, for decades, have maintained that Fuqua touched the ball before Harris, which would have made the play illegal, because of the rule then that disallowed two offensive receivers from touching the ball.
“When Bradshaw threw the ball, my first thought was to go toward the ball, because you never know what’s going to happen,” Harris recently told the Los Angeles Times. “So I started to go to the ball and the next thing I remember was stiff-arming Jimmy Warren along the sideline.
“It blows my mind that I have no visual recollection of catching the ball. That wasn’t an easy ball to catch. It just doesn’t make any sense. How did I track it? How did I keep in stride? You normally don’t catch a ball in that way. If I had dived for it, I would have been ruled down because the rules were different back then.”
In the end, Harris is a Hall of Famer who helped build a dynasty. Legal catch or illegal, ball hit the ground or not, what will never change now is Harris' place in history as one of the best ever. Perhaps that's the truly immaculate part of his story.
