Modern Batman movies tend to overlook the character's origins. Matt Reeves wants to remind everyone that Batman is the World's Greatest Detective.
Matt Reeves’ upcoming movie, The Batman, holds the exciting promise of giving audiences a new take on the Caped Crusader, while also returning the character to his roots. With Robert Pattinson wearing the mantle of the Bat, there’s been no shortage of curiosity and speculation surrounding the movie and how it will differ from previous incarnations of Batman. The way things are shaping up, The Batman is going to take the character all the way back to his comic book origins as a detective.
Batman is one of the best-known superheroes in the world, despite not actually having superpowers of his own. He’s seen a wide array of vastly different interpretations over the years, from the campy silliness of Adam West's Batman TV shows to the violent grimdark character who appeared in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. His first appearance, though, was over 80 years ago in Detective Comics. Following the success of comic strip characters like Dick Tracy, who debuted in 1931, Detective Comics #1 was published in 1937, telling stories in the “hard-boiled detective” genre that had become popular during the 1920s in Prohibition-era America. The stories quickly became influenced by masked crime-fighting characters like The Green Hornet, before eventually leading to the first appearance of Batman in 1939 in Detective Comics #27.

It’s this detective aspect of Batman that has been widely missing from most modern portrayals of the character, which tend to focus mostly on action and fighting (though The Batman will embrace brutal fight scenes). So the idea of seeing a modern version of Batman who more closely resembles an early 20th-century private eye and actually lives up to his nickname of The World's Greatest Detective is a compelling one. DC has become so synonymous with superpowers, aliens, and demi-gods, that the "detective" part of "DC" has been largely overlooked. Matt Reeves’ goal is to remind everyone of this, with The Batman drawing heavy influence The Conversation, a 1974 neo-noir mystery thriller by Francis Ford Coppola. With The Batman highlighting the sleuthing side of crime-fighting from the very start, this neglected side of Batman’s character has the chance to define the whole movie, giving audiences a very different story from what they may recognize from previous Batman movies, while still giving enough action to whet their appetites.
Robert Pattinson’s comments in a recent interview show that this is the direction Reeves has taken the hero in, noting how his first reaction to the movie's opening scene was, “Oh, this actually is a detective story.” Pattinson has been quite public about his love of Batman movies, as well as his intent to portray a stranger version of Bruce Wayne. The Batman will show a rather different character from Christian Bale’s version of Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, in which he's a high society socialite. In multiple interviews, Pattinson has described his Bruce Wayne as a deeply traumatized person who uses being the Batman as a warped form of self-therapy. So his version of Bruce obsessively throwing himself into unraveling mysteries gets back to the character's roots while also giving it a modern spin.
With Matt Reeves' previous movies being highly character-driven and Robert Pattinson's in-depth exploration, The Batman promises a more personal, psychological look at the Caped Crusader that will lay out more of his worldview. The idea of Batman returning to his origins as a true detective is certainly an exciting one, particularly after recent movies have their focus largely on him punching his enemies into submission. An oddball version of Batman may offer a refreshing change of pace, particularly with an oddball actor like Pattinson being behind him.
