Mikel Arteta has responded to criticism for Arsenal following the postponement of the North London derby. Arteta stressed Arsenal were not making this up when asking for the game to be postponed.
Arsenal should have played away in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur headquarters on Sunday (16/1/2022). However, the match was eventually postponed.
Arsenal had proposed to postpone the match on Friday (1/14/2022) because they were experiencing a player crisis due to COVID-19, injuries, and several players defended the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations. This request was then granted by the Premier League after Arsenal were deemed unable to meet the criteria for having at least 13 outfield players and one goalkeeper.
This reportedly made Tottenham angry. They accused Arsenal of just making it up so as not to compete with a mediocre squad.
Tottenham manager Antonio Conte also felt strange about the postponement of the game against Arsenal. The Italian said it was the first time he had known a game had been postponed due to an injury.
Mikel Arteta firmly defended Arsenal's decision to ask the game against Tottenham to be postponed. Arteta will also never doubt the opponent's motives if he asks for the postponement of the match.
"We don't have the players needed to put together a squad to play in the Premier League, that's 100% guaranteed," Arteta said as reported by Sky Sports.
